Studies on the flower Color Variation in Hibiscus syriacus L.

Abstract
Absorption spectra, anthocyanins, pH¢¥s, and co-pigment contents of petals were analyzed to characterize flower color variation of 47 cyanic cultivars in Hibiscus syriacus. Based on the absorption spectra of fresh petals, cultivars were classified into four groups A, B, C, and D, coinciding with the visual evaluations of petal colors. Petal colors of groups A (pink) and B (violet red) which showed ¥ë_(vis) max. in the range of 531¡544§¬, were associated with the nature and relative content of composing anthocyanins. Increases of bathochromic shifts and the bluing of the petal colors in groups C and D (¥ë_(vis) max. range 555¡540§¬) were in good agreement with the increases of the flavone/anthocyanin ratios, malvidin derivatives, malonated anthocyanins, and cell sap pH. Increases of those pigmental factors enhanced the co-pigmentation effects in groups C and D.
